Rockin'.......
During the long, harsh winter of 2014/15, I coccooned myself from the biting cold by submerging myself in a spurt of hyper-activity, cranking out a whole bunch of raw-but-vital cartoon roughs, most of them just churned out in a few minutes apiece.
Needless to say, the quality control on these drawings was pretty variable, but it was using this stream-of-conciousness, very spontaneous approach that yielded me THE FLY , a concept in itself which will keep me quite busy for a long time to come.
I have now quit doing these quick sketches as I am spending most of my cartooning time on more time-consuming polished works, however I have decided to show the few remaining unseen ruffs I did during this intensively creative period, which is where this potholing/explorer gag idea sprung from....a knowledge of basic UK musical trends of the 70s will not go ammiss for this one, for those who prefer a coherent punchline in their cartoons.
These ruffs were intended to be seen on a forum I used to frequent, but I never got around to adding this one, and here the sketch has been slightly cleaned up and has very basic color added.
Some day I might go back to turning out more of these spontaneous roughs, but right now these serve only to 'beef up' the proverbial blog.
Plate 1: the artwork after the manipulation process; still a basic ruff, though, just tarted up a bit.
Plate 2: the drawing as it was in it's original state, done in Boston, USA in December 2014.
The before-and-after comparisons here give a good indication of how a good image Manipulation Program ---I use the free GIMP service for all my cartoons--------can alter the original linework to create a better composition-------there is much more room and de-cluttering that is a fair improvement.
The last of these experimental ruffs will be uploaded here soon.
