Extreme Close-Up Series [1]: KOONG KING

TIME for a brand-new theme within the blog, mereckons, and what better for a nice change than a series of drawings of each character in [extreme] loving close-up.....


Most comic strip artists will more than likely tell you that one of their favorite assignments is invariably a zoom-in on facial features, and this approach is certainly amongst my most enjoyable cartoon endeavors.

Here we see cool ape character KOONG KING enjoying a bit of attention courtesy of sizzling cat-babe Veronica. Yet another example of the never-ending potential served up within the cityscape backdrop:  more drawings utilizing this theme have already been started, and they will scattered thru-out the upcoming cartoon examples.

A joy to work on, and hopefully this shows in the finished results....

    love the expression on Koong...reminds me of a annual cover type..like a close up of Biffo or Korky..

    I have the Beano Retro calendar for this year [2011] up on my kitchen wall, Peter: there's a brilliant close-up of Biffo looking at a mouse [drawn by Dudley]: that's where the inspiration for this came from, I think!

THIS ITEM was a one-off, fairly elaborate Christmas-themed item in which the criteria was to recreate the ambience of the late 1960s/ very early 70s humour comics put out by IPC/ Fleetway---you know the sort of thing if you are into this stuff: Whizzer and Chips, Cor!!, and many more. ---in other words. 'no outright copying of established characters ' but I had to put over the basic ambience for them. Great fun, though clearly, this one took a fair bit of time to put together. Subverso-O-toons [2] : KOONG KING

Slightly risque imagery here as we see celebrated 'BIG APE' KOONG KING studying the contents of a 'racy' gentlemen's magazine..........dubbed 'OOMPH!' in this case. OOMPH! does not actually spring from my demented imagination, but is lifted, I believe, wholesale from a brief shot in an early M-G-M Tex Avery cartoon, in which one of Tex's characters views this ficticious mag momentarily.......I forget which cartoon it was [ I've seen 'em all!]  was, but the idea has clearly stuck in my memory, and I'm glad to resurrect it here. Another cityscape view, which so peppers the highly visual World of  BABY BOOMER and his pen-and-ink companions, this is yet another recognizable backdrop that offers up great potential for muchos experimentation and visual exuberance.....in fact, there is no way I will be able to find the time to put together all the gag ideas I have written thus far: the skill is in selecting suitable material worthy of adaptation. Repeat Business [3]

TODAY'S ITEM is the fourth---and last, to date--------customized tailored caricature job I got offered by a kindly gent who liked my stuff enough to ask me back a few times. Great fun as usual and again I liked to do it in  fairly elaborate technique-style.
