Archive Wonders

Sorry, regular readers [I jest knows that some of yez are owt thar!] ---for all this disruption recently due to my main computer being zapped by cyber-baddies. The machine STILL ain't what it should be, but at least it is vurr-kink, unlike this past week when it seemed to be bogged down with internal glue....... I have been resorting to skulking in the local library---a real bonnie lass came in today, so it isn't ALL bad---------and all I could use is my backup tablet which is better than nowt, but I prefer the desktop with all it's throbbing wattage. In the meantime, I have been clearing out my flash-drive, and here is yet anudder previously-unseen archive job, concocted for the Aussie market, who have thrown me a few much-needed crumbs of cartoon employment, this past year or two. This character is called a BOOYAL BNYIP, ---[no, I haven't heard of him, either, but apparantly he is big news Down Under] Enjoi!!!Plate One:  the full color Splendor Plate Two: Black-and-wh...

ANNOUNCEMENT

Image
Sorry I have been so quiet this week, readers.....it is not neglect on my part.....quite simply my main computer at home is out of action until I get assistance so I am typing up this message via tablet in the local lbrary.....what with free wi fi and all that malarkey. I am still able to use my image program at home but at the time of writing I cannot add images onto the net....not like I prefer to anyway....... Normal service will resume as soon as is possible. Thank you for tuning in....the ratings have been pretty good Keep em peeled....Rob UPDATE, 21 Aug, 2015:  I HAVE NO DESIRE TO leave any of these postings as un-illustrated, so here I concocted a kwicko-quickie, and re-inserted later, as my girlfriend used to say: This item below gives a good illustration of how a good image manipulation program can assist the cartoonist visually: the original rough sketch has some good vitality in it, but an obvious problem with these zippy roughs is that they are so instant, they are ofte...

Dredds' Head Revisited

Image
TODAY'S HUMBLE OFFERING is but a 'cold-store freezer job', inasmuch as I am cleaning out my hard-drive and making sure all my cartoon artwork is archived and not lost: as far as I know, I have managed to hang onto everything. These items below---which look very much like the cut-out dolls on the back page of BUNTY when seen in isolation like this-------have been screened on here before but here lost details can be viddied by the old glazzies, as Alex out of A CLOCKWORK BANANA  would have put it..... As a further back-up, all my cartoon material is transferred, hopefully permanently, to shiney disk as well. I lost a lot of my original cartoons done in my youth---I take absolutely no chances on this score now, having developed a tendency to archive these suckers----- MORE BRAND NEW STUFF COMING UP SOON Robbo

Libertoons [3]

THIS 'offshoot' series of running gags involving the Statue of Liberty and great ape Koong King should prove to run for a long time: it's easy and quick to come up with this material, and I deliberately keep it sketchy to save spontanaeity. Although I remember seeing a gag in MAD Magazine about King Kong falling in love with Lady Liberty, I have never really seen this idea fully exploited anywhere ---a bit of a mystery that one---there is loads of scope for cartoon ideas in there. I am more than happy to mine this field, though. More of these already completed, more soon. PLATE ONE: The finished cartoon, kept in a fairly sketchy state PLATE TWO: The rough sketch, before proportions of the characters were altered for better results---this technique is great for getting decent-scaled  heads and faces especially---I use this a lot these days. Very easy to apply after you get used to it. Before digital tinkering, I used to lose lots of effective cartoon heads that were simply d...

THE FLY: S.W.A.T. Team

Image
I HAD REFRAINED from putting a FLY-SWAT related gag on this site: the idea is far too obvious, hackneyed and lacking in real imagination to really bother with----however, I reckon I have minted a fairly powerful cartoon image here, it's pretty hard-hitting stuff [quite literally]  and so after early reservations,  I decided to 'go for it' with this one.  I still say resorting to flyswat gags is  the creed of hacks, though. There are a thousand better routes to go with this endless science-fiction  concept here. Back in Jan 2015, somebody won a cartoon competition on a  site  I used to frequent, with their cartoon based on  sending up my drawings---I voted for it myself! Sadly I forgot to strike a copy of that cartoon  that I never drew myself .  or I might have added it on here---------it wasn't really  a bad effort,------- but I created this concept, and this is how 'The Creator' does fly-swat gags [!} This image was originally dra...

Bears'- Head Revisited

Image
ALMOST a third variation on 'Flogging a Dead Horse', these items are added here for storage purposes and reveal just exactly how I put these suckers together....... -------Clearly, the BIFFO head was drawn large-scale,  then shrunk into a smaller, seperate body, which is usually what I do when selling cartoons to payees, or as in this case, I want an especially polished look----after these composites are assembled 'as one', of course, the 'invisible mending' approach makes it all look seamless. Once you get used to this, it's a very handy tool---if time-consuming-----but the results are pretty much what I was looking for. I remember drawing a cameo BIFFO in a large crowd scene of characters I done for D C T around 1985, but I can't recall drawing Biffers ever since then---wonder if I will ever draw him again? Here's hoping! Plate One: extreme close-up of 'the head' Plate Two:   the composite character with basic color added to the background:...

LiberToons [2]:

LIBERTOONS  are really just a BABY BOOMER off-shoot, centred around Lady Liberty herself, with some silly character-based interplay- interaction from KOONG KING:  ---this is my variation on the format employed in  the   CHARLIE BROWN/ PEANUTS strip,    stopping abruptly so that SNOOPY and WOODSTOCK the tiny yellow bird can grab center stage for a good few appearences---making 'spotlight attractions', momentarily, of the supporting characters. As these new drawings  are just basically warm-up sketches and never intended for any sort of publication anywhere, I can afford to be slightly more subversive with these, making them a wee bit more 'adult'.....hence the Statues' more 'revealing' attire , and provocative pose. These are great fun for me to work on, and are very quickly rendered, to boot: loads more of these are already finito and on the way.
